Celebrities have become a powerful influence due to their social position. In social website, there are many fan pages created for celebrities or based on their song lyrics. In real life, official products launched by celebrities or products endorsed are fast-selling even though its price is higher. Some of the admirers follow their idol to every schedule listed in the official website. Some die-hard fans even stalk celebrities to their home and their social activity. Internationally, some fans club raised fund and donate to charity organization in the name of their idol. In Korea, fans buy sponsored goods in great amount and sent to their idol and the celebrities work together. Recently fans club of an actor in Korea have bought down the advertising time slot in bus, train and electronic billboard to broadcast the trailer of a new drama repeatedly.
Teens are obsessed with these celebrities. They are willing to spend money buying all related products such as DVDs, collection cards, posters, official light sticks, concert tickets and more. They would also spend time to watch variety shows and performances attended by their favorite celebrities. Why does this happen? What makes them being so obsessed with artists? Make up a poll or interview a few of them, they would say it’s love out of no where. Some adults think that such celebrities’ obsession is bad for kids. However, I feel a little differently.
First, let’s say why teenagers would be so obsessed towards famous star? It could be a feeling of love towards someone style or feeling of envious and adore of teens towards a certain talent or perfection. Some people fall in love with the voice of a singer. When they are moved by a voice, no matter it is hoarse, soft, or clear, it touches their soul indeed. It is same for music or acting skill. I have a friend whom said that whenever she heard the music composed by her favorite singer, she would feel calmed and forget her worries. Envious towards talent they wish to have or a dream that have achieved by someone first. Celebrities are the better version or the dreamed version of themselves, the way they like themselves to be but somehow it doesn’t work that well.
Some teens imitate celebrities because they allow themselves to influence by media. These adolescences change their idols from time to time but the similarity is they are all current top stars. From Rihanna to Taylor Swift then Justin Bieber. It is a way of them to catch the attention of others. They may not be excellent in their daily life thus try hard to earn people’s notice and pride in another way. Mentally, they are jealous and eager of applause and cheers given to stars. It could be a sign of lack-confident towards oneself.
Other than those, the fabulous life of artists with fame is attractive to teenagers. Differ from previous generation, the new generation youth like popularities and fame. Kids today could achieve fame with ease by internet. A post, a video clip or a photo on the net could make one become hottest search keywords within days. They enjoy the attention and awareness from others. They are joyful to interact with other people around that ‘like’ them. Teenagers today see fame as a great temptation.
Turn to the celebrities’ effect, it does not really bring great harm to teens. Teenagers always try to imitate the clothing style of their idols, this does implant a sense of fashion in youth. When they have limited financial income, they would need to be more creative or innovative to obtain what they want with what they have in hand. Celebrities could bring learning trends to teens. When a celebrity participates into certain field, their young fans would like to know more about it and go deep into investigation. This leads them to a whole new area of the world and widens their knowledge. I am also a young lady who fancies of a Korean boy band. I have known a few local fans of Korean idol group and started learning Korean language together via internet because of our idols. Teenagers may learn new languages and make friends with fans from other country.
Teenagers that obsessed with idols do not mean they learn nothing from it. Fancy a star could train young fans to operate a website, manage a forum or fan club, set up different department for smooth flowing of all matters of fans. It is like a mini company, teaches you how to co-operate in each department, divide works to each other according to their talent, set up rules to obey in order to avoid arguments and carry out websites designs. Just based on these experiences we could have interview for web directors or web designer job. Yet the adults say we are useless. On the other hand, we also progress in diplomatic affairs with other websites and fan clubs. Thus we learned how to communicate politely with others and way to write an official announcement.
Apart from this, young fans learn a lot of computer skills because most information can be accessed via internet. Translation of news is the most often thing we did to get the latest information. Besides, official photos released by official websites of entertainment firm and TV station are a source for them to learn photo editing software. Young men also learn to respect the ownership of photos taken by other fans and understand it is impermissible to edit those photos. It’s the same for video clips and variety shows. We learned how to make a video clips on our own and also how to edit a variety show to put on subbing and logos. We learned the laws one by one to make sure we do not violence the owner rights to the video.
Many people think that it is an immature and meaningless to be obsessed with famous star. They seem so far away from our reality. However that is a feeling, nobody could resist a feeling from your heart. I think “like” is a good feeling. Why should we have negative views on teens loving their idol? They are just showing more love towards people than many of us. In addition, I wouldn’t say it is meaningless because we have learned many things we didn’t know before when we fancy celebrities.
